The Author:
Let me introduce myself: My name is Ian Staley and I am a student at the University of Utah enrolled in the Athletic Training Education Program and the Army Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC). I am studying Exercise and Sports Science with an emphasis in sports medicine (Athletic Training) and minoring in Military Science. I am a senior in my last semester currently working as an athletic training student for the University Men and Women’s Tennis teams. Also as a senior I help run the Army ROTC program with my fellow senior cadets in planning and teaching training. Currently I am personally responsible for directing the physical training of the underclassmen cadets. When I graduate I will commission as a second lieutenant in the Army and attend Infantry Officer Basic Leader’s Course at Fort Benning, Georgia and then Ranger School after that. I plan on using my degree to help keep my unit fit and healthy for combat as well as to educate soldiers on how to take care of themselves. One of my goals is to make a career out of the Army so I can serve and protect my country and defend those who are unable to defend themselves.
I am a third degree black belt in Taekwondo currently working towards achieving my fourth degree and rank of Master. I have been practicing martial arts for over 15 years including Taekwondo, Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, Krav Maga, and several other styles. I used to be the head instructor for my academy in Sandy, Utah before I had to devote my full time and attention to school. Martial Arts has played a very important role in my life for years. Being fit and playing sports are important to me and how I live my life. I love the outdoors and recreation like climbing and kayaking and hope to do it in more places around the world as I travel. I enjoy traveling, learning about other cultures and customs, and the history of the place I am in and hopefully will get to continue traveling to a lot of interesting places. When I travel I try to taste the local food and drink, visit historic monuments or museums, and learn a little about the local customs and city life.

Details.
Here are a few more details about myself and why I am creating this blog. I am 25, live in salt Lake City, Utah, and a full time student. That's me in my "dobok", the Korean uniform used in Taekwondo. I was a four time state champion, Northwest division champion, and International Las Vegas World Open champion in Taekwondo Olympic sparring. The picture on the front page is me with Former UFC Welterweight Champion Matt Hughes. Below is me with my good friend at a University of Utah football game against our longtime rivals- Brigham Young University.
My Career.
I mentioned that I am going into the U.S. military soon and hope to commission as an officer. One of my primary goals in joining the military was to fight terrorism and learn about counter-terrorist techniques and hopefully pursue that as a career in, or outside of, the military. The CIA or Secret Service was also very appealing to me but I have always wanted to join the military and to serve my country at arms. I'll be branching Infantry in the United States Army, as i mentioned earlier, and plan to serve as an officer for an infantry platoon, hopefully in the Ranger Battalion. Currently the United States government and military is engaged in anti-terrorism efforts around the globe, not just the Middle East, and the effect of military action on tourism and globalization interests me as well.
This blog was created as an assignment for a class on International Tourism and I wanted to use it to research how terrorism affects the globe. It should help to keep me active in current affairs and learning about the effects of terrorism on globalization. If I'm successful I plan to continue this as a hobby of sorts and currently enjoy what I have accomplished so far. Hopefully you find this blog useful or interesting and will recommend it to friends or colleagues.
Thank you,
Ian Staley.
